hermanson-headshot-circleWelcome to my blog, where you can follow my adventures in journalism. I’m a writer, editor, and former newspaper designer in Richmond, Virginia.

I’m a freelance writer for a variety of lifestyle publications. Currently I’m the DC/MD/VA correspondent for The Knot and copy editor for The Scout Guide‘s 60-some city publications. I spend my days freelancing for a host of regional and national publications.

I have written about my travels for Southern Living and Forbes Travel Guide, the state of the organic industry for Delicious Living, leading restaurant professionals for Plate Magazine, and my extroversion and inner cat lady for Hello Giggles. I also have kvetched about my struggles as a young female journalist for Cosmopolitan, and done a handful of gear reviews for Ski magazine. For a year and a half, I wrote a weekly restaurant review column for the Richmond Times-Dispatch. You can view my portfolio here.

I started dabbling in content writing, creating stories for Zillow’s Porchlight blog, Wells Fargo’s Why I Work site, Swedish Match’s Umgås Magazine, Shutterfly’s Wedding Paper Divas, along with wine tourism websites Napa Valley, Sonoma, and Wine Country

Along with a background in writing, I also have experience in marketing and communications, working with nonprofit organizations (Visual Arts Center of Richmond), art galleries (Reynolds Gallery), contemporary art shows (CURRENT Art Fair and Craft + Design Show), high-end art auctions (Collectors’ Night), and higher eduction institutions (University of Richmond’s Modlin Center for the Arts). I believe that the arts are vital to our community, which is why I also commit a portion of my time to Richmond’s vibrant arts scene.

In my spare time I serve as the marketing chair on the junior board at The Faison Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and providing resources for people of all ages who have autism. I also serve on the Visual Art Center of Richmond’s Craft + Design Show committee.

I have a passion for travel and culture. I love experiencing new people and places. My travels have taken me across Scandinavia to Estonia and Russia; down the Danube River from Nuremberg to Budapest; and on winding roads through Ireland, Scotland and England. I created my travel blog, RVAnewbie, to share my adventures in my new home of Richmond, and to satiate my wanderlust on a hyper-local level.

I love reading and writing, cooking and eating, camping, hiking, skiing, traveling, and all things Scandinavian.
